Sydney-Hobart yacht race skipper Grant Wharington sells ‘superyacht’ home

Champion skipper Grant Wharington has sold the final apartment in his luxury development inspired by the sleek lines of a superyacht following a marathon campaign.

The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race winner collected $3.9 million as the last remaining of three units in his ‘Voir’ project at Paradise Point sold under the hammer.

The four-bedroom, three-bathroom waterfront apartment on Paradise Pde was marketed by Mitchell Booth, of Amir Prestige Group, who took the property to auction after it was listed for sale with another agent in 2022.

A veteran sailor and boat builder turned property developer, Mr Wharington moved to the Gold Coast from Victoria 12 years ago, and was part of a four-way ownership syndicate for Stefan Racing.

He skippered supermaxi Skandia to line honours in 2003’s Sydney to Hobart. The yacht was renamed Wild Thing, and became known for its dramatic capsizing in the 2004 race. It was rebuilt and went on to several more wins.

The high-end home spans 400sq m of ground-floor living space with 63m of main river frontage, delivering spectacular coastal views.

Mr Booth said the buyer was triumphant among four registered bidders, with an opening bid of $3.5m kicking off proceedings with auctioneer Nigel Long at Amir Prestige’s Grand Winter Auction Event.

“This property had been on the market for a bit over 12 months, so we came in and said, ‘let’s do it our way’,” Mr Booth said.

“The buyer actually saw it four months ago but didn’t have any pressure then to buy it.”

Mr Booth said the buyer was a downsizer with family nearby on ritzy Sovereign Islands.

“This had everything a downsizer would want without going into a small apartment.”

Mr Wharington, of Pacific Projects Consultants, said the full-floor homes designed by Raunik Design Group were inspired by his thrilling marine lifestyle.

“The beautiful marble, the mirrored doors and architraves, and the polished stainless steel — those are the sorts of super high-end finishes people love when they live on the water,” he said.

The building’s exterior mimics the curve of breaking waves in off-form concrete, while a private marina berth can accommodate vessels up of to 24m.

Mr Wharington was also behind the build of the Gold Coast’s YOT Club, launched in 2019. He later sold his half-ownership share to business partner, David Fisher.

He and wife Kylie retained Voir’s top-floor penthouse, while the first-floor unit sold prior to completion for about $6m.
