The “irreplaceable” Brisbane abode of top Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja has just hit the market in a sale that’s tipped to be bittersweet for the top-order batter.
After spending half a decade in his beloved home at 70 Kneale Street, Holland Park West, the celebrated athlete and his wife Rachel have decided to move with their baby girl Aisha to the Sunshine Coast, marking the end of an unforgettable property innings at a home he’s loathe to walk away from.
The 34-year-old, who was the first Pakistan-born and Muslim to represent Australia in cricket, snapped up the five-bedroom, five-bathroom mini-palace in 2016 for just $2.75 million. Now, with the city’s high-end housing market still sizzling from a once-in-a-decade boom, Mr Khawaja could just make a motza.
Tony O’Doherty, of Belle Property Bulimba, is selling the iconic residence on behalf of the iconic cricketer and said the home was not only in a league of its own, but one of the best he’d ever had the pleasure of selling.
“Usman thought long and hard about relocating and the main reason [for that] was walking away from a house he’d never get again,” Mr O’Doherty said.
“The only negative to them both leaving is that house is irreplaceable.”
Mr O’Doherty has marketed the property as “best offers by June 8 at 3pm” and while he’s unable to reveal an asking price, he said the abode presented incredible value in a suburb that had boomed over the past five years.
“I think it will most certainly be popular because you can actually buy it for a lot less than the replacement cost. To buy that land today and to build that masterpiece today would be a lot more,” he said.
“The level of finish and the functionality for such a house of this scale [is incredible]. There are very few houses this big that don’t feel big … it flows so well. From the lowest point you can see the city and, from the top, you’ve got one of the best views of the city.
“They have maintained it immaculately. And then they welcomed their firstborn into the world and that’s why they’re moving – to be closer to his in-laws on the Sunshine Coast.”
The home is perched on a 703-square-metre block in a street that Mr O’Doherty said was Holland Park West’s finest. It has 270-degree views across the city and to the mountains from its north-facing location.
Additional features of the architect-designed abode include a lift, an indoor/outdoor saltwater, temperature-controlled pool with a six-person spa, an office, a gym, a library and two fireplaces.
While the first inspection has been scheduled for this Saturday, Mr O’Doherty said enquiry had already been strong thanks to more than just the home, but its incredible location.
“Homes in this area are really tightly held … and when Usman bought it he was looking everywhere – he was looking in Hawthorne and New Farm as he had flexibility. And he chose Holland Park West. He chose it for the house and for the area and what it could do going forward.
“Now, this particular street is a signature street for the whole area … in fact, it’s one of the finest on the south side.”
As for the home, he said it was one of the most high-calibre properties he’d ever come across.
“When I sold it for $2.75 million [five years ago], Holland Park West wasn’t what it is today. This home would have been worth $4 million in Bulimba or Hawthorne … and the way this home was constructed and finished puts it in a league of its own,” Mr O’Doherty said.
