Million-dollar payday for former Broncos captain Darius Boyd

Former Broncos captain Darius Boyd has secured a million-dollar payday thanks to a stunning turnaround engineered by designer wife Kayla and some savvy digital skills.

The couple have been indulging their love of renovations and designer upgrades since a jawdropping transformation of a Hendra home they bought in 2016 when Mr Boyd was well in the throes of Broncos superstardom.

Their most recent sale saw them take a rundown one bedroom, one bathroom, one car space beach apartment – listed under Mr Boyd’s name for $500,000 five years ago – and turn it into a favoured escape and money spinner in one of the hottest strips of coastline in the country.

They listed the property for sale on March 9, with it going under the hammer just 20 days later in in-room auctions by Harcourts Coastal, fetching a $1m price.

Many happy snaps have been posted on the beach in front of the apartment by the Boyd family, after the couple transformed the apartment to the uber cool Boheme Beach Bode – and even gave it its own booking website.

Post renovation, the couple were renting it out short-term for about $260 a night, but that has since seen its own pandemic surge in price to $400 a night Monday to Thursday, $550 a night Friday to Sunday, with off-peak rates at $300 for Monday to Thursday and $350 for Friday to Sunday.

These views will never be built out.

The Boyd’s Boheme Beach Bode was furnished with a kingsize bed, an updated bathroom, a double fold-out sofa bed in the living room, one underground carpark spot, airconditioning, an upgraded full size kitchen, large balcony, laundry, with linen and towels as well as Foxtel and Wi-Fi provided.

The complex has a sauna, barbecue and entertainment area, well maintained gardens and excellent onsite management, according to the Boyd’s sale listing.

“This property cannot be built out which is gold,” their listing said. “You are blessed with views to Coolangatta and north to Stradbroke Island.”

The Boyds turned this apartment into a solid money spinner in one of the hottest strips of coastline in the country.

A year ago, the Boyds’ Paddington investment – bought four years ago for $1.205m – was sold for $4.2m within 39 days of listing, after they put a Joe Adsett design into the property.

Their Hendra home, bought for $810,000 in 2016, and redesigned with award-winning Brisbane builders Graya, sold for $1.86m in 2020. That home has since gone on to re-sell in July last year for $2.815m.
