Stockland has gained approval to build a “shred” factory as part of the Kawana Waters masterplanned community on the Sunshine Coast.
The Shred Factory comprises an indoor swimming pool and facilities, 1,500sq m skate park and 1,109sq m of gym space including a dance studio, gym, sports-related health services, offices and café.
The facility is part of the Bokarina Beach development with houses, townhouses and eight apartment buildings in the final precinct of Stockland’s Oceanside community.
Health, sport and shopping precincts are a major part of planning and the attraction to regional areas including the nearby new Maroochydore CBD by Walker Corporation and further south, the Springfield City development.
Sunshine Coast councillor Peter Cox said the region is pleased to welcome another high-performance community and sporting centre to the area.
“The Shred Factory will cater to the needs of both our Sunshine Coast community and athletes across a number of sporting codes,” Cox said.
“This facility is the latest asset to compliment the neighbouring Kawana sports precinct and will undoubtedly have a significant impact on attracting interstate and international athletes to our region.”
Springfield City attracts Brisbane Lions hub
Another region using health and fitness to attract people is the established Springfield community which will be home to the Brisbane Lions training ground and women’s games in late-2021.
Speaking at The Urban Developer’s recent Rise of the Regions event, Springfield City Group managing director Raynuha Sinnathamby said the benefit is twofold for the area.
“We have seen the growth of sport facilities and what that means is all those health needs around sport need to come to the area,” Sinnathamby said.
“There area those lifestyle amenities that have brought people here but the more challenging part of the project is bringing businesses here.
“That really has emerged probably more so in the past five years where we are seeing that diverse workforce.”
Sinnathamby said creating new jobs in the area, alongside infrastructure and amenities is key to the success of the development.
“People are looking at those other outer CBD locations as really attractive,” Sinnathamby said.
Future growth outside metropolitan areas is expected to continue with affordable homes, new technology and changing work requirements driving the property market post-pandemic.
