‘Special home on unicorn site’ set to change hands after six decades with same family

One of the Sunshine Coast’s most iconic homes – a beachside relic perched high on a bluff – is poised to be sold.

No.250 Alexandra Parade, at Alexandra Headland, has gone unconditional after a private deal was brokered.

A remnant of a bygone era, the 1960s three-bedroom fibro beach shack known as ‘Bunya Bunya’ is one of the last shoreline houses in the area. It’s also likely the oldest.

But after being held by the same family for about six decades and rented to a well-known local for the past 32 years, it’s set to change hands.

HOME Sunshine Coast’s Andrew Schofield said the classic old house on a 911sqm lot was prominent and one of a kind.

“It’s a unique and special home,” he said.

“It’s a real time capsule that has been standing on top of the hill for a long time.”

The home is well known by locals and catches the eyes of visitors to the region.

The block, with dual street access, is zoned high density, with views north to Noosa.

The property is in prime position towards the pointy end of the headland, less than 100m to one of the best surfing breaks in the state, close to Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba beaches and minutes from shops, restaurants and cafes.

“It’s a unicorn site really,” Mr Schofield said.

It was quietly put to market at the request of the vendor, via HOME Sunshine Coast’s contacts.

A “discreet and delicate” campaign was preferred because the home had a long-standing tenant and because of the home’s standing within the community.

“(It) has been done respectfully because it is a property that the community is attached to as well,” Mr Schofield said.

“It’s not just (about) the vendor and the buyer and the tenant that’s been there forever … so they chose to do it out of the public eye.”

But there was still an incredible response from prospective buyers.

“It (putting the property on the market) was quite emotional for them,” Mr Schofield said.

“We had multiple offers on it. It was hotly contested among people from near, far and wide.”

He could not disclose the price it went unconditional for, or what the local buyer intended to do with it, until settlement was reached.

But he suggested all options were open.

“The buyers are looking at what they’re going to do with the site,” he said.

“It’s in a rock star position, so I’d say it will be something high-end.

“We’ll let the community know (what will happen to the site), whether it’s a knockdown rebuild or whatever.”

Mr Schofield said the long-term resident would be taken care of by the buyer-in-waiting.

“Rentals are tight, and the tenant is going to be looked after,” he said.

“I can’t say in what way but it’s not like he’s going to be kicked out. He’s a good member of the community and is quite well known by a lot of people.

“We’ve had some chats with him and he’s happy with what’s proposed.

“I’m sure he has known for many years that it could be sold, and now it’s time.”

One of the only other homes in the area, the more modern 13 Booralong Crescent, went to auction earlier this year and was passed in for $5.75m million.
