Gabba twin towers join rush to cash in on Brisbane property’s new darling suburb

If anyone still doubted that Woolloongabba is Brisbane’s new Mecca for property investment, a planned massive apartment development in the inner-city suburb should clinch the argument.

A proposal by developers Sarazin for two 20-storey towers with more than 360 one and two bedroom units at the corner of Wellington Rd and Nile St was lodged with Brisbane City Council this week.

It joins several other apartment towers either planned or under construction in a part of Brisbane that is undergoing rapid transformation on the back of the Cross River Rail project and the 2032 Olympic Games.

The proposed project, within 300 metres of the Gabba stadium, is large enough to trigger referral to state government planning agencies given its expected impact on local transport infrastructure.

Dubbed Nuage – French for ‘cloud’ – the towers will feature Art Deco style design by local architects Hayes Anderson Lynch, the firm responsible for the Cloudland and Bakery Lane complexes in Fortitude Valley.

Sarazin, which is also behind the nearby three-tower Silk development, has told the council the project will feature big recreation decks as well as a dog park on the fifth level.

In documents lodged with the council, the architects described the project as “an architectural vision of soft elegance, inspired by cloud formations, the delight of Australia subtropical climate, and the fine craftsmanship and rich materiality of Art Deco architecture and design”.
