New statistics show 500,000 Australians migrated interstate last year, many responding to Covid lockdowns – with Gympie one of the prime real estate beneficiaries.
As Brisbane property prices feed into the Sunshine Coast and Gympie markets, local prices have been boosted by the fact that Queensland is the most popular destination state in Australia, welcoming thousands of migrants from the big exodus states, Victoria and New South Wales.
New reports say net immigration into Queensland for the year ending June 2021 saw the population increase by 30,939, the largest increase in population since 2004 which saw a population gain of 35,498.
Observers say the main reason for people leaving southern states has been the extended lockdowns in both states. The increase in population in the sunshine state is not expected to decline as young families seek job opportunities and cheaper housing.
New South Wales and Victoria saw a decline in population in the same period to June 2021.
Victoria saw an outflow of 18,300 and New South Wales declined by 16,676.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show the big influx to Queensland in the most recent statistical year, ending in June last year.
It is predicted that Melbourne will see a decline in the population of 32,000 in 2021-2022 and in the same period Sydney is forecast to lose 38,900.
Observations in recent years have shown Gympie property increasing in response to young families moving north to escape by price rises once seen as incredible.
