A Mooloolaba man is the new owner of an entire 1980s apartment block on a prime beachside site after emerging victorious from the weekend’s auction.
The “incredibly unusual” property, which is the only apartment building under single-ownership on Parkyn Parade, set a record for the Mooloolaba Spit.
It sold for $7,525,000, which was an astounding return for the Brisbane-based retired couple who bought the block on a whim for $60,000 in 1984.
They built a brown-brick apartment block two years later which the new owner could easily knock down to build a mega-mansion on the beach.
But Grant Whisker, from Define Property Agents, said the man was intending to keep the building and refurbish the three existing dwellings.
All three apartments at 58 Parkyn Parade have large bedrooms, ensuites and open-plan living and dining, with sliding doors opening to balconies.
They were previously being used as holiday homes for extended family.
Saturday’s anticipated auction was the only time an entire building like this had been sold on the Spit.
Mr Whisker said there were 20 registered bidders involved in the on-site auction, including five on the phone who were a mix of people from interstate.
Bidding started at $6.5 million and a crowd of more than 100 flocked to watch the proceedings, including a number of curious real estate agents.
“This is a Mooloolaba Spit record price, nothing has ever sold for that sort of number on the Spit,” said Mr Whisker.
“The owners are thrilled. It was a good result for sure. It met our expectations is a fair comment.
“It’s the end of an era for the family, really.”
As a comparison Mr Whisker said three-bedroom, two bathroom strata-titled apartments in the area were selling for between $2 million and $3.5 million.
For Mr Whisker, who is a dominant agent around the Spit, the auction was his 25th sale in the area in five years.
Mr Whisker said the listing had attracted global interest and he had fielded calls from Brazil, Britain and the United States.
Mr Whisker said the property offered extensive opportunities for the new buyer.
“If you took the building away, what you’ve got is a 620sqm allotment on the edge of one of the best beach accesses in the country.”
